Annie's Star Quilt Guild donated this beautiful quilt to CFOL to be used as the prize in a library raffle. The proceeds will benefit Childrens' programs at the Chico Branch Library. Stop in at the library to buy your raffle tickets. The drawing will be Saturday, December 19th, 2009.

Oct. 18th is a big day in the library

Even though the library is closed on Sunday, two big things are happening that day:

A church group is coming to clean house. CFOL is supplying the cleaning supplies and Chico Branch Librarian Susan Rauen is supplying the direction. Be gone dust!
The Butte County Library's computer software is being updated, so the catalog will be unavailable for a day (or two?). You might notice some improvements in the catalog, and you will definitely notice the circulation staff adjusting to the new look and feel of the check out process. Be patient while the kinks are worked out.

New Butte County Library Director

A permanent library director was announced: Linda Mielke comes to Butte County with lots of experience.

Mozart Mile

If you ran/walked the Mozart Mile in Bidwell Park (October 4th), you might have seen some Chico Friends of the Library signs, and people reading aloud to the Mozart Mile participants. It's all part of the CFOL effort to keep people aware of the library and its supporters.

New and updated events on the Events page: The Fall Festival is coming in October. The Fall Craft Fair is coming in November. The book sale is doing some rearranging.

Sidewalk Book Sale, July 18th

CFOL Book Sale

Book sales are held Saturday mornings, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m., at the Chico Branch library, corner of Sherman and First Avenues.

NOTE: Big Sidewalk Sale Saturday, July 18th - Paperbacks, Magazines, and some children's books and hardbacks. Go early to the Farmers' Market and then come enjoy the nice outside morning air.

Chico Library Hours change & Holiday book sale schedule

There will be no book sale on July 4th.
The Chico Branch Library hours are changing, beginning Monday July 6th:

Sunday & Monday: closed
Tuesday through Thursday: 9am - 8pm
Friday & Saturday: 9am - 4:30pm

These new hours are a result of the City of Chico's reduced library support.

City Council Reduces Library Funding

The Chico Branch of the Butte County Library took a budget hit from the Chico City Council today. The City Council reduced its library funding by about $40,000. Chico Branch Library hours will be reduced... again. (The final City Council budget vote is July 7th. Today was a motion to accept the City Manager's recommendations.)

The regular Saturday book sale has new hours, opening 15 minutes earlier.

Book sales are held Saturday mornings, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m., at the Chico Branch library, corner of Sherman and First Avenues.

On June 16, at 3pm, the Chico City Council is voting on 2009-2010 Library Funding.

The City of Chico will vote on its budget on June 16th. Write or email them to ask for library support. Addresses are on the CFOL web site

Good News for Butte County Library!

A new proposal recommends no additional cuts to the Library beyond those that have already occurred! Butte County Administration issued a press release on May 13th.
And... the Chico Branch Library now has wireless Internet access! The Chico Friends of the Library donated money toward buying the network equipment

Catch the Bus to the May 18th Supervisors' Meeting

The Butte County Board of Supervisors' budget meeting is important. In order to make it easy to show your support of the library...

There are buses going from Chico to the May 18th Board of Supervisors' meeting. To get a seat on the bus, go to the Chico branch library and sign up. Ride the bus. Wear Red. Bring a book. Picture a sea of red-shirted people, all holding a book.

Lunch will be provided for bus riders, thanks to Fred Marken of Grilla Bytes.

A letter from our California Library Association's Lobbyist has been stored on the CFOL web site. Take a moment to read the letter and then...

write the Governor and the four legislative leaders, as well as your own Senator and
Assemblymember(s) to encourage their opposition to any proposal that would borrow
property taxes from cities, counties, and special districts.

TV ad will display on local television

Fred Marken, owner of Grilla Bites, was instrumental in making a Friends of the Library TV ad. With the generous support of KHSL and its affiliates, this ad will air several times before the Butte County Board of Supervisors 2009-2010 budget meeting which begins on May 18th and will continue at least until May 19th.

John Few, retired librarian and Chico Friend, stars in the ad along with Nathan, a dedicated young patron from Paradise.

Classic Film Night at the Library

The 2008-2009 season of Classic Film Night at the Library has ended. The May 13th showing of Philadelphia Story has been cancelled.

Please Attend City Council Meeting, April 21st

The April 21 meeting of the board of Chico Friends of the Library is officially moved to the Chico City council chambers at 6:30 pm.

Come, wearing red. The City Council Chambers are at Chico Municipal Center - Main Street between East 4th and 5th Streets.

The funding for the city's additional 25 library hours to continue until the end of the fiscal year is on the consent agenda, item 2.2. If it stays on the consent agenda it should be voted on a few minutes after 6:30 after some proclamations and such. If a council member pulls it off the consent agenda, be prepared to speak if they open it to public comment.
