News since the last Carrel
- Notes from the August 19th Board Meeting
CFOL is a major contributor to a Butte County survey that will be done on behalf of the library. More news about that can be had from Derek Wolfgram, Butte County Library Director.
CFOL purchased network equipment for the library so that WiFi would be available for visiting computer users. Originally scheduled for the 1st quarter of 2008, it was delayed but should be at the top of Butte County's computer guru's list of things to do.
CFOL purchased new lightweight tables for use in the meeting room. These lighter tables shouldn't damage the brand new carpet.
Fe Howard is the new CFOL Historian, replacing Louise Agos.
The CFOL Cookbook publication is on schedule for the 1st week in October.
The First Annual CFOL Craft Fair will be held in the library meeting room the Saturday before Thanksgiving, November 22. If you are interested in contributing Hand Crafted items (needle craft, quilts, art, baked goods, or any other ?), please let us know.
- Notes from the July 15th Board Meeting
Ann Neumann and Cathy Mueller, members of the Sacramento Valley Chess League, have been helping children enjoy a chess program in the library. In fact, it has been so successful that CFOL will purchase 10 chess sets for use in the library.
There is a summer Teen Art Show in progress. See Melissa Ramos for more information, or read the poster in the Young Adult section of the library. CFOL is sponsoring first prize of $50, and second prize of $25.
Thirty-four CFOL volunteers have each added another 100 hours of volunteer time to their total volunteer hours, which means CFOL will be donating $850 in their honor for book purchases. CFOL board member Betty Forbes does a fine job of keeping track of volunteer time. Thanks Betty.

Notes from the June 17th Board Meeting
Anne Morris is our new Secretary. Thanks for taking the job, Anne!
The deadline for submitting recipes to the CFOL Cookbook has been extended to July 1st. Drop your recipes in the recipe box at the circulation desk in the Chico library, corner of 1st and Sherman.
See the Calendar of Events for more information about the Fall Festival and the Book Sale.
Ilona Toko, Butte County Senior Library Assistant, sent us this letter of thanks:
Dear Friends,
WOW ! what a program, and WOW again ! what a response !! Wild Things, held June 10 at 10:30 am, was just the kind of program to bring the children of the community into the Library, and in they came, parents in tow, to fill and overflow the Library Conference Room. It was exciting, informative, engaging, and oh, so well done. The place was abuzz, and agrowl, and ahiss, and aschreech, and I am sure the bear, and the alligator, and the python, and the monkey and all the other critters will be talked about all summer.
I just want to say thanks to Target, The Friends, everyone involved in making this event happen, and especially Heather whose excitement and enthusiasm ensured that parents and children knew well in advance that the Wild Things were coming.
Ilona Toko - Volunteer Opportunity: Fall Festival
planning is starting now. If you would like to volunteer
to help,
contact us to let us know.
- Some numbers for you to think about
During the first 5 months of this year (January through May) library volunteers shelved 209,419 items, or almost 1,400 items each day... a lot of volunteer effort. It's the same dedicated people all the time and when they take a vacation the library books aren't shelved, so consider volunteering to help shelve this summer! In order to volunteer, just go into the library and tell them you want to help - they will direct you to the volunteer coordinator.
By the way about 7,000 of the shelved items were new or replacements. A large percentage of new items are purchased with CFOL dollars, and many new-to-the-library items are received as donations from the community.
- CFOL-funded Upholstery
Come on into the library to see the newly-upholstered furniture. Square Deal Mattress Factory is doing a nice job.
- The CFOL Annual Meeting was held on May 20th.
Macy Kelly, outgoing CFOL
President, gave a summary of the year's fund raising and
literacy activities.
The next CFOL Board and President were elected. Ann Elliott will be our next President.
We still need a Secretary. Please volunteer to be the next CFOL Secretary.
Thanks for being our president, Macy!!
Robert Woods, author of
Travels With Cornbinder, gave a very
informative talk about Ishi, the last member of the Yahi
tribe of Native Americans.
If you are interested in more information about Ishi, the library has some very good books by Theodora Kroeber.
You can contact Dr. Woods at MathContr@aol.com.
- Our children's librarian, Heather Tovey, unearthed some original
children's art by Bernard Waber, Louis Sacher, Eric Carle, and Ruth
Heller Gross. CFoL member Linda Lee made sure they are framed,
and Art Etc, 122 W. 3rd St, Chico, did a fine job and gave CFoL a
significant savings.
Chico Carrel, Spring 2008
CFOL NEEDS YOU
The CFOL Annual Meeting will take place Tuesday, May 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Chico Branch of the Butte County Library, 1st and Sherman.
All members are invited. Bob Woods, our guest speaker this year, will relate stories and tales of Ishi. Bob has presented this talk with accompanying slides to many civic and educational assemblies here in the state. It should prove both interesting and enlightening.
As at all Annual Meetings a Financial Statement for the 2007-2008 will be presented by Treasurer Susan Davis. A more in-depth presentation is made at this meeting than is printed from time to time in The Carrel.
During the meeting the election for new officers and board members will take place. The Rules and Regulations of the organization state that the offices of president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary are elected for a two-year period. These offices are staggered to provide continuity with past actions of the organization. Therefore, this year we will be voting for president and secretary while Vice-president Anne Nordhus and Treasurer Susan Davis will remain at their posts for one more year. The following individuals have agreed to stand for election for the 2008-2009 board:

The Bylaws of the organization state that the board shall consist of no fewer than 14 and no more than 17 members including officers. For next year’s board there are at least one to four openings. We ask that you please consider serving.
The duties are light but are both important and significant to the community. In the last issue of the Carrel was listed the accomplishments of the CFOL as led by the board of the organization. There is only one meeting a month lasting from one to two hours. The meetings are conducted with collegiality and friendliness while recognizing seriousness of purpose. Anyone interested in serving on the board please contact John Few at cfol@chicolibrary.org.
BOOKMARK CONTEST
The winners are in, and a presentation of awards was made April 16 during National Library Week at the Chico Branch of the Butte County Library. As announced in the last Carrel this annual contest for grades K-8 was held during the month of March. Sponsored by the CFOL this event is a great opportunity for young people to display their artistic talents while promoting both reading and the library. Join the Circle of Knowledge was the theme for National Library Week this year and entrants were encouraged, though not required to focus on this aspect of public libraries. In addition to cash prizes, this year’s winners will have bookmarks made of their entries for distribution in the library, and their original entries will be displayed along the glass wall separating the Children’s room from the circulation desk.
The winners are:
| Grades k-2 | 1st Katherine Ping 2nd Ian Smith 3rd Ben Smith |
| Grades 3-5 | 1st Andrew Urbanowicz 2nd Amanda Havey 3rd Mary Jewel |
| Grades 6-8 | 1st Hannah Hull 2nd Elisabeth Urbanowicz 3rd Natalia Salgado |
See a bad picture of the 1st place bookmarks here. There are reproductions of these booksmarks in the library.
CLASSIC MOVIES NIGHT
There are two classic movies yet to be viewed during our inaugural season for this program of the CFOL. We next present All about Eve, starring Bette Davis, Ann Baxter, Gary Merrill, Celeste Holm and others including a rare first glimpse of Marilyn Monroe. As Margo Channing says, “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” The following month we will be viewing Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, staring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn Eva Marie Saint. A classic thriller, this film continues to keep audiences on the edges of their seats. All about Eve is screened May 14 and North by Northwest, June 11, both at 7:00 p.m.
Since the installation of the new audio surround system in the committee room patrons have reported a much greater enjoyment of the films that have been shown.
We will be taking a break from our Classic Movies Night series during the summer months of July, August and September. We return on Tuesday, October 14, with the award winning musical West Side Story. Watch for posters and flyers announcing the new season’s showings. If there is a particular classic film you might wish to view on a larger screen with surround sound let us know and we will consider adding it to our line up for next year. You can get in touch with John Few at 897-0675.
COOKBOOK
Volunteers, library staff, friends and other interested persons – we want your recipes, especially ones you may have made for potluck luncheons and dinners over the years. Please write, copy or cut and paste your recipe onto the enclosed form. Be sure to include your name, phone number and email address. If there is something – say love, a secret ingredient, special herbs or spices, old family tradition – that makes your recipe special, please let us know. Also indicate your connection to the library, whether volunteer, CFOL board member, County Library Advisory Board member, avid reader, read to your children every night, etc. Recipes for and from children and young adults are also encouraged, so indicate that if pertinent. You may send up to five recipes which should be turned in at the library circulation desk stating that it is for the CFOL Cookbook. If you have questions please contact Susan Davis, CFOL treasurer at 345-1255 or gmasue1@att.net. We will need typing and proofreading assistance for this project and if you wish to help, call Susan at the number listed above. Funds generated from sales of the cookbooks will be donated to the Chico branch of the Butte County Library to purchase new books. The cookbooks will be ready in October in time to consider them as reasonably-priced holiday gifts.
MEET MELISSA
Melissa Ramos is the third in our series highlighting staff members
who are currently enrolled in the Master of Library Science program at
California State University, San Jose.
A Chico native, Melissa is a product of public schools from Kindergarten through California State University, Chico. However, there were times she studied abroad at Merida, Mexico and Santiago, Chile. Ultimately she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies. By the end of that year Melissa found herself as a volunteer shelver in the Children’s Room of the Chico branch of the Butte County Library. In January 2005 she was working as an AmeriCorps member with the county Literacy Services and continued in that capacity for a two-year period.
During this period Melissa was hired as extra help for Literacy Services and to help out at the Circulation desk at the Chico Branch of the Butte County Library. It was while employed in this capacity that she helped co-coordinate the FFL (Families for Literacy), ELLI (English Language Literacy Intensive), and PAL (Partners and Learners) projects.
Melissa was hired this month as a Senior Library Assistant in Children’s Services at the Chico Branch. All are eager to have her on board.
In her spare time Melissa likes to travel the world; hike various trails open to the more adventurous; cook unique and ethnic vegetarian cuisine; attend live music concerts; and be a child again by swinging in the park
FOND FAREWELL
The editor of the Carrel and the entire board of the CFOL give grateful thanks to our President Macy Kelly. After two and a half years at the helm she has decided to step down and work in the background. Macy was editor of the newsletter in 2006 when the current president of our organization found he could no longer fill that post. Macy agreed to fill the post for the last six months left of the term only to be elected for another two years. Macy has accomplished much and has proven to have extraordinary leadership qualities. For this and her unflagging dedication to both the Chico Friends of the Library and the Chico Branch of the library we thank you! Macy, you will be greatly missed.
Memberships
February was the month for CFOL membership renewal. If you have not renewed your membership or completely forgotten where you put the last Carrel with the pertinent information along with an envelope drop us a line or check out the website and email us and we will get the information to you ASAP. Thanks to all those that have renewed!
