August Update

BOOK SALES

The members-only sale for August takes place on Friday, August 3 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.   The regular sale open to the general public continues on Saturday morning, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  With CFOL’s low prices, shoppers won’t be able to resist the many bargains of books, magazines, media, and other items.

Books are also available for sale  in the library’s lobby at fifty cents per item whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.

Book sale hours on Fridays and Saturdays are not affected by the recent changes in library hours.

BOOKMARKS!

Graphic designer and CFOL Board member Max Infeld has designed new bookmarks available free to all library patrons and book sale attendees.  With gentle reminders to support your CFOL, these attractive and useful bookmarks are available at the Circulation/Reference desk in the library as well as at the book sales.  Share them with your friends and neighbors and help increase awareness of CFOL’s contributions to the Chico branch of the Butte County library.

POPULAR LIBRARY PROGRAMS CONTINUE DESPITE REDUCED LIBRARY HOURS

New reduced Chico branch library hours are now in effect.  On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays the library will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Friday and Saturday hours are now 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Sunday hours remain 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The library is closed on Mondays.  Despite these shortened hours, story times and other patron-favorite programs continue.  Visit the library for a complete schedule of adult, teen, and children’s programs.  There is never a dull moment at your Chico branch library!

CFOL HELPS PURCHASE BOOKS AND MAGAZINES FOR THE LIBRARY

Butte County has severely reduced the budget for books, magazines, and supplies for the entire county library system.  CFOL has increased their support for books and magazine subscriptions to lessen the impact of budget limitations.  This is possible thanks to your CFOL membership fees, book and cash donations, as well as your purchases at the book sales.

On your next visit to the library, stop by the children’s Room to admire the four new chairs provided by your CFOL.  Our childen’s librarians report that they are colorful, attractive, and comfortable.

New book carts have also been funded by your CFOL.  They are also colorful, functional, and smooth-rolling.  Carts are a library necessity, as a substantial proportion of staff and volunteer time is spent moving books from place to place within the library.

Your CFOL also pays for the annual license fee that makes the Sunday afternoon movies possible.  Join the fun at 2:00 p.m. each Sunday except holiday weekends in the library’s meeting room.

Consider becoming a library or book sale volunteer.  Additional volunteers are always welcome to help with the book sales.  Library volunteers perform many tasks within the library.  See Oliver Allen at the Reference Desk for more information and for an application.

July Update

FIFTY PERCENT OFF BOOK SALE PRICES JULY 6 AND 7

All items at the CFOL book sales on July 6 and 7 will be discounted 50%.  That includes items for sale at the members-only sale on Friday, July 6 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm as well as at the regular sale open to the general public on Saturday morning, 9:00 am to 11:30 am.  With this deep discount off CFOL’s already low prices, shoppers won’t be able to resist the many bargains of books, magazines, media, and other items.

Books are also available for sale  in the library’s lobby at fifty cents per item whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.

Book sale hours will not be affected by the changes detailed below.

NEW LIBRARY HOURS BEGIN JULY 25

Due to a reduction in library funding in the Butte County budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year, 5 out of 6 of the library branches in the Butte County Library System will have open hours cut.  The Chico branch will open one hour later and close one hour earlier Tuesdays through Saurdays.  On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays the Chico branch will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m.  Fridays and Saturdays the branch will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m.  Sunday’s schedule remains unchanged, opening from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Chico branch library will remain closed on Mondays.  For schedule changes at other Butte County Library branches, consult the Butte County Library website.

Book sale hours will not be affected by these changes.

Cuts to the County’s library budget will also severely curtail funds for ebooks and online databases such as the popular and useful auto repair manuals.  Only $500 county-wide will be provided for materials and books.

SUMMER READING PROGRAMS CONTINUE

During June and July an array of activities designed to encourage reading and literacy emphasize the joy of reading for all ages.  Children and teens earn a free book by engaging in reading, games, crafts, and other activities, while adults can participate in reading challenges of various kinds.  The summer theme, Reading Takes You Everywhere, is illustrated by lists of books available in the Butte County Library System related to various countries and regions on the large wall map near the reference desk.   Special guest presentations are scheduled during the summer.  Your CFOL is providing  funding to supplement support from the Butte County Library system.  It’s not too late to visit the Chico branch library to learn more and sign up.

CFOL SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE FOR THE CHICO BRANCH LIBRARY

Your CFOL purchases books and materials for the library averaging $6000 monthly .  In light of the severely limited County budget for new books, materials, and supplies ($500 monthly for all branches to share), the importance of these purchases cannot be overstated.  This is the financial resource to fulfill patrons’ purchase suggestions as well as meet other library needs.  Book sale profits, benefactor donations, and CFOL membership fees provide these funds.  While books purchased by the CFOL are designated as “belonging” to the Chico branch, they are available to all Butte County Library branches through the inter-branch borrowing system.

Your CFOL pays for the annual license fee that makes the Sunday afternoon movies possible.  Join the fun at 2:00 p.m. each Sunday except holiday weekends in the library’s meeting room.

Help your CFOL support the Chico branch library by becoming a library or CFOL volunteer.  Additional volunteers are always welcome to help with the book sales.  Library volunteers perform many tasks within the library.  See Oliver Allen at the Reference Desk for more information and for an application.

CFOL ANNUAL MEETING FEATURES RENOWNED AUTHOR/PHOTOGRAPHER

In addition to election of officers, the Annual Meeting of the CFOL Board of Directors will feature a presentation by Doug Keister, who has authored over 40 books, magazine articles, and other publications on a wide variety of subjects.  He is particularly noted for his photography of historic architecture.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 pm in the Chico branch library’s meeting room.  For more information, click here.

CFOL SUPPORTS TEEN “FANDOM” CLUB

During the Month of May, with financial support from CFOL, nine teen members of the weekly teen “fandom” club enjoyed a shopping spree at the local Barnes & Noble Booksellers.  This “Teen Book Buy” purchased 40 books, shown above, to add to the library’s collection.

SUNDAY MOVIES

On each Sunday afternoon the Chico branch library shows family-friendly movies at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  These movies are free and open to the public.   Your CFOL has provided the funding for a license for these showings.  Enjoy an entertaining afternoon movie alongside friends, neighbors, and other library patrons courtesy of CFOL.

CONSTRUCTION FOR “MAKER LAB” CONTINUES

The Chico branch library’s Maker Space has been officially designated the Maker Lab.  Your CFOL is making significant contributions to this new resource.  Devices such as 3-D printers, a button maker, sewing machines, typewriters, and an Ellison die-cut machine will be available for public use.  There will also be space for tutoring, book discussions, Fandom Club, computer lab and other programs.  Your CFOL will purchase materials as well as storage cabinets and work surfaces, while Butte County is constructing the surrounding walls.  Talk to library staff to share your ideas for additional devices and programs.

In the meantime, come to the library for a demonstration and hands-on experience with the Chico branch’s new Virtual Reality equipment!  Demonstrations will be held on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  While the initial VR equipment was purchased with a grant, your CFOL provides additional funding for software and accessories.  Additional grants have also been received for new equipment.  Virtual reality experiences are now taking place in the Maker Lab.  The 3-D printers are also located in this area.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Maker Lab will take place upon completion.

And there is no need to wait for the completion of the Maker Lab to receive help with graphic design projects.  Drop in to weekly group meetings on Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for help with computer design of logos, posters, flyers, business cards, and more.  Click here for more information.  This group is free and open to the public.
