July Update

HOLIDAY CLOSURE

All Butte County library branches will be closed on July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

BOOK SALES

All items at the book sales on July 7 and 8 will be half price!!

The members-only First Friday book sale will take place on Friday, July 7 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Join the Chico Friends of the Library and enjoy the calmer, less crowded atmosphere to browse the many books, media, and other materials  for sale.

Regular book sales open to the general public take place every Saturday, except holiday weekends, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Books are also available for sale in the library’s lobby whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.

NEW CHICO BAGS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

Declare your support for your CFOL with purchase of an ever-popular Chico Bag displaying the words “Chico Friends of the Library.”  Available in red or blue for $6, these useful and practical carriers easily hold your reading selections from the library or the book sales, as well as groceries and other shopping purchases.  They make thoughtful and commemorative gifts for friends and visitors to Chico.  See the Circulation or Reference desks at the library to obtain yours.

FALL BRINGS CHANGES IN CHICO BRANCH LIBRARY HOURS

Beginning in September, after Labor Day, the Chico branch will be closed on Mondays.   Increasing costs for other Butte County services have caused reductions in the budgets of many County departments, including the library.  Despite the cut in hours, your Chico branch library will continue to provide the services patrons appreciate and depend on.  A new service, help and information for Social Security applicants and recipients, will soon be added.  Your CFOL pledges to advocate for restoration of the Monday hours in the future.

CONSTRUCTION FOR “MAKER SPACE” BEGINS SOON

Your CFOL will make significant contributions to the new “Maker Space” to be built in the center of the library.  Devices such as 3-D printers, a button maker, sewing machines, typewriters, and an Ellison die-cut machine will be available for public use.  There will also be space for tutoring, book discussions, Fandom Club, computer lab and other programs.  Your CFOL will purchase materials as well as storage cabinets and work surfaces, while Butte County will construct the surrounding walls.  Talk to library staff to share your ideas for additional devices and programs.

SUMMER READING PROGRAMS

Summer reading programs for children, youth, and adults take place throughout June and July.  Your CFOL contributes materials and prizes to participants in “Reading by Design,” this year’s program theme.   CFOL also helps buy snacks and art supplies for the teen Fandom craft and chat club that meets weekly.  A special magic show at toddler storytime on June 22 and a musical performance on June 29 were sponsored by CFOL.  July events include Uncle Joe’s Bees presentation, Native Basket Design workshop, a folk music performance by Adam Miller, and a discussion and movie focusing on Tarzan.  Summer reading programs end with the announcement of contest winners on Saturday, July 29.  Visit your Chico branch library for details.

SUNDAY MOVIES

On each Sunday afternoon throughout July the Chico branch library will show family-friendly movies at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  These are free and open to the public.   Your CFOL has provided the funding for a license for these showings.  Escape the summer heat with an entertaining afternoon movie alongside friends, neighbors, and other library patrons on July 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 courtesy of CFOL.

Libraries are for Vacations too!

I love using library resources when I’m planning a vacation or even while actually travelling. I was recently 2000 miles away from Chico but had run out of reading material. Easy-peasy: I went to the library’s website and downloaded a book to my IPhone! I almost always use library books to help plan trips. Just learned where some of the best hiking trails are in Sequoia and King’s Canyon Parks where I’ll be next week from “Fodor’s Southern California 2015.” The library has lots of travel DVD’s too. It’s Happy Trails…thanks to BFodorsutte County Library!
