October Update

BOOK SALES

The October “First Friday” book sale for CFOL members only will take place Friday, October 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Join your fellow CFOL members in a leisurely browse of the many books and other materials offered at very economical prices.

Regular book sales open to the general public will resume on Saturday, October 7 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Books are also available for sale in the library’s lobby whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.

SUNDAY MOVIES

On each Sunday afternoon the Chico branch library will show family-friendly movies at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  These are free and open to the public.   Your CFOL has provided the funding for a license for these showings.  Even though the intense heat of summer has transitioned to perfect autumn days, enjoy an entertaining afternoon movie alongside friends, neighbors, and other library patrons on October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 courtesy of CFOL.

AMAZON PURCHASES AID CHICO FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

Making a purchase from amazon.com?  Consider designating Chico Friends of the Library as your charitable organization to receive a percentage of the sales amount from Amazon.  For a description of the program and FAQs see  https://smile.amazon.com/about.

Helpful information includes: “On your first visit to AmazonSmile, smile.amazon.com, you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. We will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.”

CONSTRUCTION FOR “MAKER SPACE” BEGINS SOON

Your CFOL will make significant contributions to the new “Maker Space” to be built in the center of the library.  Devices such as 3-D printers, a button maker, sewing machines, typewriters, and an Ellison die-cut machine will be available for public use.  There will also be space for tutoring, book discussions, Fandom Club, computer lab and other programs.  Your CFOL will purchase materials as well as storage cabinets and work surfaces, while Butte County will construct the surrounding walls.  Talk to library staff to share your ideas for additional devices and programs.

In the meantime, come to the library for a demonstration of the Chico branch’s new Virtual Reality experience!  Demonstrations will be held on Tuesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

And there is no need to wait for the completion of the Maker Space to receive help with graphic design projects.  Drop in to a new weekly group meeting on Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for help with computer design of logos, posters, flyers, business cards, and more.  Click here for more information.  This group is free and open to the public.

LOOKING AHEAD

The 11th annual Trivia Bee for Literacy will take place on Friday, November 17 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room.  This friendly competition is entertaining as well as educational.  Form your own team of trivia experts, support another team, or join the audience for the benefit of literacy programs.  For more information call 530-538-7198 or contact the reference  desk at the Chico branch library..
