January Update

HOLIDAY CLOSURE

All branches of the Butte County Library will be closed on Saturday, January 13 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Regular library hours and schedule will resume on Sunday, January 14.

BOOK SALES

The January “First Friday” book sale for CFOL members only will take place Friday, January 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Join your fellow CFOL members in a leisurely browse of the many books and other materials offered at very economical prices.

Regular book sales open to the general public will resume on Saturday, January 6 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.  All book sale items will receive a 50% discount on Saturday, January 20.

Books are also available for sale  in the library’s lobby at fifty cents per item whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.

SUNDAY MOVIES

On each Sunday afternoon the Chico branch library shows family-friendly movies at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  These movies are free and open to the public.   Your CFOL has provided the funding for a license for these showings.  Enjoy an entertaining afternoon movie alongside friends, neighbors, and other library patrons courtesy of CFOL.

CONSTRUCTION FOR “MAKER SPACE” HAS BEGUN

The Chico branch library’s Maker Space has begun to take shape in the center of the library’s main room.  Your CFOL will make significant contributions to this new resource.  Devices such as 3-D printers, a button maker, sewing machines, typewriters, and an Ellison die-cut machine will be available for public use.  There will also be space for tutoring, book discussions, Fandom Club, computer lab and other programs.  Your CFOL will purchase materials as well as storage cabinets and work surfaces, while Butte County is constructing the surrounding walls.  Talk to library staff to share your ideas for additional devices and programs.

In the meantime, come to the library for a demonstration and hands-on experience with the Chico branch’s new Virtual Reality equipment!  Demonstrations will be held on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.  While the initial VR equipment was purchased with a grant, your CFOL provides additional funding for software and accessories.

And there is no need to wait for the completion of the Maker Space to receive help with graphic design projects.  Drop in to a new weekly group meeting on Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for help with computer design of logos, posters, flyers, business cards, and more.  Click here for more information.  This group is free and open to the public.

DEPARTURES

Barbara Seawall, longtime library advocate and book sale manager/supporter, passed away in December.  Her devotion to the Chico branch library continues on with a portion of her estate bequeathed to the Chico Friends of t he Library.
