March Update

NEWS FLASH!  POPULAR AUTHOR COMES TO CHICO

Best selling mystery author J. A. Jance will appear in Chico for a book reading and discussion on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 pm in the library’s meeting room.  This highly anticipated free appearance is sponsored by your CFOL.  For more information and to register (space is limited), click here.  A limited selection of J. A. Jance’s books will be available at the event, or you may bring your own to be signed.  Open to CFOL members and to the general public, the is a free event not to be missed!

NEW CHICO LIBRARY BRANCH MANAGER TAKES THE HELM

Chico branch library staff, patrons, and members of CFOL have welcomed Susie Serrano to her new position as manager of the branch.  Susie brings considerable experience in several areas of library service and management as she assumes the duties of branch manager.  Read more about Susie in the February 2018 edition of the Chico Carrel.

BOOK SALES

The February “First Friday” book sale for CFOL members only will take place Friday, March 2 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Join your fellow CFOL members in a leisurely browse of the many books and other materials offered at very economical prices.

Regular book sales open to the general public will resume on Saturday, March 3 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.  There will be no book sale on Saturday, March 31 when the library is closed to honor Cesar Chavez,

Books are also available for sale  in the library’s lobby at fifty cents per item whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.

SUNDAY MOVIES

On each Sunday afternoon the Chico branch library shows family-friendly movies at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  These movies are free and open to the public.   Your CFOL has provided the funding for a license for these showings.  Enjoy an entertaining afternoon movie alongside friends, neighbors, and other library patrons courtesy of CFOL.

CONSTRUCTION FOR “MAKER LAB” CONTINUES

The Chico branch library’s Maker Space has been officially designated the Maker Lab.  Your CFOL is making significant contributions to this new resource.  Devices such as 3-D printers, a button maker, sewing machines, typewriters, and an Ellison die-cut machine will be available for public use.  There will also be space for tutoring, book discussions, Fandom Club, computer lab and other programs.  Your CFOL will purchase materials as well as storage cabinets and work surfaces, while Butte County is constructing the surrounding walls.  Talk to library staff to share your ideas for additional devices and programs.

In the meantime, come to the library for a demonstration and hands-on experience with the Chico branch’s new Virtual Reality equipment!  Demonstrations will be held on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.  While the initial VR equipment was purchased with a grant, your CFOL provides additional funding for software and accessories.  Additional grants have also been received for new equipment.  Virtual reality experiences are now taking place in the maker space.  The 3-D printers are also located in this area.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Maker Lab will take place upon completion.

And there is no need to wait for the completion of the Maker Lab to receive help with graphic design projects.  Drop in to a new weekly group meeting on Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for help with computer design of logos, posters, flyers, business cards, and more.  Click here for more information.  This group is free and open to the public.

January Update

HOLIDAY CLOSURE

All branches of the Butte County Library will be closed on Saturday, January 13 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Regular library hours and schedule will resume on Sunday, January 14.

DEPARTURES

Brenda Crotts, Chico library branch manager, will retire from her forty years of Butte County service at the end of January.  Brenda has overseen extensive rearrangement of the library’s materials and displays as well as implementation of innovative new programs and services.

Barbara Seawall, longtime library advocate and book sale manager/supporter, passed away in December.  Her devotion to the Chico branch library continues on with a portion of her estate bequeathed to the Chico Friends of t he Library.

December Update

BOOK SALES

Regular book sales open to the general public will resume on Saturday, December 2 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Books are also available for sale in the library’s lobby whenever the library is open.  There are no better bargains for book lovers.  All book sale items will receive a 50% discount on the weekend of December 1 and 2.  Due to the holiday schedule, the last book sale of 2017 will be Saturday, December 16.

Preliminary construction of the much anticipated Maker Space has begun in Oroville.  At the completion of this phase, the structure will be moved to Chico for installation and finishing touches.   Your CFOL will make significant contributions to the new “Maker Space” to be built in the center of the library.  Devices such as 3-D printers, a button maker, sewing machines, typewriters, and an Ellison die-cut machine will be available for public use.  There will also be space for tutoring, book discussions, Fandom Club, computer lab and other programs.  Your CFOL will purchase materials as well as storage cabinets and work surfaces, while Butte County will construct the surrounding walls.  Talk to library staff to share your ideas for additional devices and programs.

ANNUAL “BUY THE BOOK” EVENT

Add the Chico branch library to your holiday gift list this year by purchasing one of the library’s choices for the “Buy theBook” event.  Books on the library’s “wish list” are displayed on the table near the library entrance.  Take your selection to the Circulation/Reference desk to complete the purchase.  The book will then be added to the library’s collection for you and other patrons to check out.
